Reading order inside a block

Left→right, top→bottom within each square.

What you will learn

You will decode any square using strict order (initial → vowel → final), read multi-block words as units, and avoid “Latin left-to-right” zig-zagging.

Step 1 — The reading algorithm

  1. Find the initial consonant (or ㅇ placeholder).
  2. Find the vowel cluster (maybe two elements forming one vowel).
  3. If there is a bottom row, read it as the final consonant(s).

Step 2 — Width vs height

Wide vowels (ㅗ,ㅛ,ㅜ,ㅠ,ㅡ) push the consonant up or left; tall vowels sit beside the consonant. Copy 한국 and 음식 in a grid notebook — one syllable per cell.

Step 3 — Words, not spelling bees

Read these aloud slowly, then at classroom speed: 친구, 학교, 선생님, 대한민국.

Common mistakes

  • Reading English loanwords letter-by-Latin-letter instead of syllable blocks.
  • Skipping double consonants in the middle of ambition (try 짧다 later).

Self-check

Take any headline, cover the translation, and syllabify in pencil under the text in ten minutes.

Study rhythm: Skim “Reading order inside a block” for structure, then re-read aloud. Fifteen-minute sessions usually beat one long cram when you are learning Korean from scratch.

Examples & practice: mini conversation

Read across: English meaning → Korean sentence → romanization (Konglish-style pronunciation guide, not official MR).

손님 So I read ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ in one box first, not left-to-right all at once? 한 칸 안에서는 글자 순서가 정해져 있죠? han kan an-eseoneun geulja sungseo-ga jeonghaejyeo itjyo?
서점 점원 Yes: initial, vowel, optional final—always that order inside. 네, 초성·중성·종성 순서예요. ne, choseong·jungseong·jongseong sunsoyo.
손님 한국 is two blocks, not four Latin letters. 한국은 네 글자가 아니라 두 덩어리. hangugeun ne geuljaga anira du deong-eori.
서점 점원 Try 친구—chin·gu, two syllables, two squares. 친구—친·구, 네모 두 개. chingu—chin·gu, nemo du gae.
손님 My brain wants to zig-zag. I’ll trace boxes in a notebook. 제 머리는 지그재그 하고 싶어요. 연습장에 네모 칠게요. je meorineun jigeujageu hago sipeoyo. yeonseubjang-e nemo chilgeyo.
