Seoul Mulls Sending Warship to Tsunami Region
Korean military authorities are considering dispatching a Navy warship to South Asia to assist in reconstruction efforts following an earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that rocked the Indian Ocean on Dec. 26.
Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung met with reporters Monday and said his ministry was considering plans to dispatch a battle-ready vessel to the crippled Indonesian coast on a mission that in many ways overlapped with the similar United Nations-led peacekeeping operation (PKO).
If a warship is dispatched, it would likely be an LST landing craft weighing over 2,500-tons that is capable of approaching any shores, or a transport vessel.
The vessel would be tasked with conveying a, food and other relief supplies and reconstruction personnel to badly-hit areas.
Military authorities are also considering deploying additional Air Force C-130s, like one that delivered medical supplies and returned to Korea on Sunday.
