Samsung SDI Co., the world's second-largest producer of plasma-display panels, said Tuesday that they have developed the world’s largest active matrix (AM) type organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, measuring 17 inches.
The OLED is made of electricity-powered, light-emitting organic substances and have been praised for having a wider viewing angle, lower power consumption and a swifter response than the thin-film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) screens.
An official with the company said the newly developed OLED is capable of brighter and sharper images at a speed faster than liquid crystal displays (LCD), and will be used with personal computers, laptop monitors as well as mobile handsets.
The official said that it will take 5-6 years to commercialize the OLED technology and the market for the OLED display is expected to grow to about US$3 billion by 2007.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDI said that they aim to raise 2004 consolidated sales to W4.779 trillion, up 26 percent from W4.779 trillion of last year.
