Ahn Byeong-ki has made some really famous movies including The Phone and Nightmare. I haven't seen Nightmare but The Phone was actually really good. It was creepy and had a great plot. Mr. Ahn really knew what he was doing.. So, what went wrong with Bunshinsaba?
I had really high expectations on this movie because of The Phone. Maybe that's why Bunshinsaba really wasn't that good. The trailer was fine and the synopsis sounded great but.. Really, Byeong-ki, was it really you who made this movie?

SYNOPSIS
An all-girl school student Yu-jin gets bullied by her classmates so she decides to put a curse on the classmates with two of her friends. I don't know what "Bunshinsaba" really is but Yun-ji seems to call it to kill the students who bullied her. (In Whispering Corridors they use Bunshinsaba as well but it had a smaller part in that movie. If someone could explain what is it I would be thankful.)
Terrible things start to happen when the curse actually works, killing those students one by one. More terrible things start to happen when Yun-ji realizes that she had summoned a spirit of Kim In-sook, a student who got killed 30 years ago. It turns out that even when all of those cursed students are dead, the spirit won't leave and Yun-ji becomes possessed by the ghost of Kim In-sook.
What really happened to Kim In-sook? What does she want? And why the new art teacher is acting so creepily? If you want to know, watch the movie..

The great thing about Bunshinsaba is that it's really stylish. Ahn Byeong-ki really knows how to direct modern horror and scare people. The movie uses the klicheed black-haired-ghost-girl as the basic element but it still manages to play its part. I mean that hair really succeeds in scaring and bringing shivers on people's backs.
But the bad thing about the scare scenes of Bunshinsaba is that their kinda overly creative. They start with really dark and creepy atmosphere but they end in a really silly and funny way. And this movie uses a lot of shocks. It's not necessarily a bad thing but those shocks are not scary. They're just loud as hell and will deffinately make you deaf.
But overall the horror part of this is movie is good. I like the ghost element and a few good scares seen in this movie. One thing is particularly good: When a scare scene is on you can really *feel* it. You just can't turn your eyes away from the screen. Ahn Byeong-ki type of scares pull you into the movie and you get hypnotized immediately.

The worst thing in this movie is the script. The idea is good (Bunshinsaba curse) but the plot is not, even below average. There are too many people in Bunshinsaba. I hated those mafia-looking guys sitting around the table in some kind of storehouse and yelling to each other. It was just so ridiculous. I hope they won't be in the American remake.
Some of the lines were terrible. Especially when it came to love of some sort. You know how those scenes are made in B-type movies. Sometimes it felt like people just shouted and cried without any reasons, just because it would be dramatic and theatrical. Well, it wasn't. It was only embarassing.

But I really loved the way they used flashbacks in Bunshinsaba. It's actually hard to use them right, because they are supposed to support the story, not to make it more confusing. In Bunshinsaba they appear logically, right when you need one, and they're not too long so that you don't forget the actual story. (But if there was an oscar for great flashbacks it would go directly to Memento Mori.)
Overall the plot is kinda boring. It's not unique nor touching but it manages to keep the viewer in front of the screen. There are some really ridiculous scenes but the main idea is good. Don't be expecting a remarkable screenplay if you're planning to watch this.

The acting is actually not that bad. Lee Se-eun, the girl who plays Yu-jin, does a great job as a frightened student. Lee Yoo-ri, the ghost, acts quite well also. But I absolutely hated male actors in this movie. They were SO bad! Maybe it's because of the silly lines and roles..

The Judgement
Bunshinsaba is an average horror movie. It's well directed and the acting was not bad, but the screenplay sucked. The idea gave a great oppoturnity for a great story but this did not happen in Bunshinsaba. Overall the plot is almost ridiculous. The best thing in the movie is the scares. Ahn Byeong-ki really knows how to deal with horror and he shows us his great talents. So.. Rent it if you can and buy if you're a fan of Korean horror movies.
