``Wait a sec. Wait a sec,’’ he says as he and the crew dash to a group of girls walking along Apkujong’s Rodeo Drive. ``Come on. You know who you are.’’
Flashing a wicked yet playful smile that signals the camera’s red light to go on, the girls know that they are in for a session with Supasize.
Supasize is the MC of MTV Korea’s ``Most Wanted,’’ a hit show that goes from one hot spot to another talking to the younger generation, taking in requests for their favorite music videos. After taking the show into his own hands he has made the show become one of the most popular shows the local leg of the U.S.-based music cable network airs.
The secret to how the big gorilla-like rapper has been able to keep a hold of the mic even after more than two years? Supasize certainly seems to know how to get people talking. He’s not exactly smooth talking or suave. Surprisingly, it’s his bluntness and somewhat awkward style of conversing that charms viewers.
However, the 22-year-old says that it hasn’t always been all that easy. ``Getting interviews off people on the street is harder than you’d think. So many just take off at the sight of a camera. Let’s just say that I’ve done my share of chasing,’’ he explained.
``But now after a few years, just a look is all that it takes to recognize the camera-shy from the `oh me, oh me’ style,’’ he said modestly. ``That, and more and more people are recognizing me and the crew.’’
When Supasize first started his on-the-road-interviews, getting the quotes, getting out, and moving on to the next target was the only thing he had on his mind, which seems only natural for a rookie VJ. However, it was at some point that he realized that the show has gone from just another music channel show to a show that really reflects the lifestyle, fashion trends and ideas of the nation’s young people.
``We go to `the place to be’ and `the place to be seen,’ basically where kids hang out,’’ he said. The show is about ``listening to them talk about what’s on their minds, what’s troubling them lately and what’s in and what’s out in terms of music.’’
Supasize and the MTV crew can be seen on the streets of fashion mecca Apkujong, a favorite get-together spot; the backstreets of Kangnam Station; the shopping paradise Myongdong; Hongdae, and Shinchon, just to name a few.
``I mean what better place is there to get a chance to find out what’s hot and what’s become lukewarm?’’ he shrugs. ``I had heard that pastel tones especially pink would be big this season. On the street, I saw that the predictions were right as flocks of girls were parading around in pink. Things like this happen all the time. Sometimes it’ll be clothes; sometimes it’ll be accessories. Naturally, I pop in an occasional fashion tip or two that could come in useful for audiences at home.’’
In its earlier episodes, Supasize has interviewed some of today’s most popular stars before they debuted and shot up to superstar status, something that he takes and should take some pride in. Actress Park Han-byul, singer Star, actor Chang Kun-suk, and soccer player Cha Du-ri were some of the lucky that had caught the eye of Supasize.
What many still may not know is that VJ-ing is not the big guy’s full time job. Debuting at local clubs when he was a mere middle school student, Supasize is a hip-hop artist at heart. Currently working with Joosuc and taking on every opportunity to stand on stage, Supasize is cooking up something of his very own. In just a few months his group Square will bring out their debut album.
``There were times when I felt kind of down because I was recognized as just a VJ. But now I know that I bring the best out of `Most Wanted,’’’ he said. ``Being a VJ is now a part of my life just as being a rapper is and for the time being I plan on continuing juggling both.’’
So, if you ever happen to be walking down the street and a big teddy bear of a person approaches you stop and chat a little. Fluent in English and also able to speak a little Japanese, Supasize is always ready to lend an ear and hear you out.
``Most Wanted’’ airs at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. |
